The
Mission Inn, a National Historic Landmark built between 1876 and
1931 by voracious collector Frank A. Miller, has forever defied
accurate description. Now covering an entire city block, it began
as an inn called Glenwood Cottage, the Millers' adobe home. Following
family tours abroad, Miller incorporated his extensive acquisitions
into both the inn's decor and its structure. From the home's first
addition, the Mission Wing, grew the Cloister Wing and Music Room,
the Spanish Wing and Gallery, and the dramatic International Rotunda
Wing with its flying buttresses, outdoor Court of the Orient, St.
Francis Chapel, and Atrio. Docent-led tours highlight the history
of the Mission Inn and the more than 6,000-piece art collection
on display throughout the hotel.
